The Birthday Party
One opening night of Harold Pinter's The Caretker, Terence Rattigan accosted him with these words – "Harold, Harold, I know what it's about. It's about God of the Old Testament, the God of the New Testament and Everyman."
"No Terry'" said Pinter "It's about two brothers and an old man."
This anecdote in mind, I hesitate to make any pronouncements about The Birthday Party, but they tell me I must say something in the program so that audience, if it wishes, can say, "Phooey!"
So here goes! the central theme of The Birthday Party is as follows: to create and maintain a livign soul within our selves is a difficult, struggle in which most of us do not succeed. The play, using techniques of musical hall and "kitchen sink drama" tells us the story of several people who, for a variety of reasons, are failures in this regard.
