A Christmas Carol

by Charles Dickens
Adapted by Barbara Field

Notes from the Artistic Director

Welcome to our Christmas party. Tonight you journey with us to Christmas in the time of Dickens. When that garrulous, grumpy, greedy Scrooge joins our party, you won't be able to ignore him. You may not admire Scrooge at first, but I'm sure you will welcome back Edward Atienza, last season's Phil Hogan in A Moon for the Misbegotten. You will also recognize the work of Terry Gunvordahl, our designer. Many of you commented to me about his designs for A Moon for the Misbegotten and Whiskey Six last season. I think you will like this design at least as much.

The production you will see tonight is the culmination of five years of wishing. Many of us at Theatre Calgary wanted to bring back the idea of a big Christmas family show. Theatre-going should not only be the preserve of individuals and couples. For some shows it is more fun to be able to come as a family. If this project is supported by enough of you, we hope to make the family show an annual event
outside of our regular season.

In the new year we will present Old Times by Harold Pinter. This will be directed by Brian Rintoul who directed our highly acclaimed production of Betrayal. At present we are hard at work on Sharon Pollock's new play Doc. I think you are going to like this examination of the life of a small town doctor.

In previous notes you have read about our touring company, The Stage-Coach Players. I would like to welcome them off the road and onto this stage to perform in A Christmas Carol

I think I can hear the Dickens family in the background getting ready for Christmas so I will stop with a toast to you, wishing you and yours all the spirit of the season.
