For the first time in our history, three of Calgary’s largest arts organizations – Arts Commons, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Theatre Calgary – are joining forces for a special musical presentation with an important message for the world. Ragtime: A Concert Performance  will celebrate the power of music to explore the human spirit at the core of the most pressing social issues today, in the world premiere of a new adaptation by the acclaimed Boston Pops orchestra of this Tony Award-winning musical.

Ragtime follows three vastly different families in search of the American Dream in New York at the turn of the century: African Americans in Harlem, Eastern European immigrants in the Lower East Side, and upper-class Whites in New Rochelle come across historical figures like stage magician Harry Houdini, car tycoon Henry Ford, activist Booker T. Washington, and anarchist Emma Goldman as they navigate racism, class struggle, privilege, and police brutality.

Based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow and adapted for the stage by three of the most celebrated musical theatre writers of our time, Tony Award winners Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, and the late Terrence McNally, Ragtime was nominated for 13 and won four Tony Awards in 1998 and continues to grow in appreciation as a modern Broadway masterpiece.

Don’t miss this limited engagement of a one-of-a-kind concert directed by Theatre Calgary Artistic Director Stafford Arima and featuring the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Three performances only, June 10-11, 2022.

The music in Ragtime: A Concert Performance was created for the Boston Pops with support from the Cincinnati Symphony.

RAGTIME CONCERT VERSION is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
