A Christmas Carol

by Charles Dickens
Adapted for the stage by Greg Nelson and Ian Prinsloo

Notes from the Artistic Director

Traditions take many shapes and forms. Years ago, while on vacation in England, I bought a Christmas tree ornament. A bright red ball made out of steel. I carefully placed it on a spindly branch of the young hemlock tree at my cottage. Every year during the holidays I trudge through the snow to check on the tree. For over five years that ornament has remained in place. My annual visit with my living Christmas tree is one of my favourite holiday traditions.

You probably have your own traditions around significant holidays. People you spend time with, things you do. Traditions are something exciting to look forward to, and comforting in their repetition. For thousands of people in this city, a part of their Christmas tradition is the Theatre Calgary production of A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens wrote a magical story that sets the tone for the holidays - compassion and kindness.

A big part of the tradition of this production is our Ebenezer Scrooge, Calgarian Stephen Hair. I met with Stephen recently and was inspired that in this, his 12th season as Scrooge, his face still lights up when he talks about this play. The sets and costumes have been redesigned over the years, his Tiny Tim's have changed, and certainly the world outside the theatre is profoundly different from a decade ago. But every year, Stephen and Scrooge go through an incredible transformation as they discover what Christmas is all about. We thank you Stephen for your insight, intelligence and heart in bringing this story alive for so many years.

And we thank you for including A Christmas Carol in your holiday traditions.
