Volunteer With Us
We’re proud to have a strong and dedicated team of volunteers at Theatre Calgary. There are more than 200 active volunteers that regularly give their time helping to facilitate administrative duties, productions, events and special occasions.
Volunteerism has been a long-standing tradition and is a great reflection of community involvement at the theatre. Volunteers have been a part of our team since we were founded in 1968, and many of our volunteers have been with us for 10+, 20+ and even 30+ years.
Join this diverse, passionate group of people who share the pride and accomplishment of Theatre Calgary.
Interested in joining us?
Volunteer applications are currently closed as our roster is at full capacity. If you are interested in joining the waiting list, please email us, and we will contact you when space opens on our team.
To volunteer with Theatre Calgary, you must:
- Be 16 years of age or older;
- Be able to attend once per production run (6 times per year) through the months of September to May;
- Be confident in leading patrons out of the building should we be required to evacuate the building.
Due to the nature of the Max Bell Theatre, long periods of standing and the repetitive navigation of stairs are required while working as a volunteer usher, as well as navigating high balcony levels in our building.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!

My wife and I had season tickets for many years, and often, we would see our volunteer friends greet us (as ushers) when we arrived for the plays. We liked the theatre so much we decided to volunteer too, starting five years ago. We enjoy helping the patrons, and best of all, we get to greet our friends who come to the theatre.Steve
I have been volunteering for over 15 years. The reason I keep coming back is the people I meet, and also the plays that I get to see. The group that I usher with is unique, as we have all been volunteering together for so long.Valerie
Theatre Calgary is a great place to meet new people, reconnect with those you’ve met in the past, and take in some fantastic theatre. This is my third season with the team and I will continue to participate as long as they will have me.Colleen
I have enjoyed volunteering for the last four years for many reasons. The plays are always professionally performed, I enjoy interacting with and assisting the public whenever I can…and the good atmosphere keeps calling me back to volunteer.Ruth
I have been volunteering as an usher for numerous years and I absolutely love the cultural experience that this volunteer position offers. The camaraderie among the volunteers is incredible, and all of the staff are friendly and welcoming. It is an honour to be a part of such a vibrant organization... Volunteering is a very rewarding evening of artistic richness, in our very own city core.Noreen
I get great joy in helping people to their seats, saying a ‘hello’ at the coat check, or wishing them a great evening taking their tickets (for the performance).Janet
This will be my third season as a volunteer and I look forward to my night out very much. The people are warm, welcoming and professional. The volunteer roles and expectations are always clearly outlined and explained. You really feel valued and appreciated. It is a great opportunity to see the productions, meet new people and contribute as a volunteer. Thank you for all you do, to make us feel so welcomed.Nancy
