Overview

Copenhagen is inspired by actual events that have intrigued and baffled historians for more than 50 years. In 1941, German physicist Werner Heisenberg travelled to Nazi-occupied Copenhagen to see his mentor and longtime friend Niels Bohr. The two were brilliant physicists, whose work together had opened the way to the atomic bomb, but who were now on opposite sides of World War II.

Why did Heisenberg go to Denmark? What did the two men say to each other? What happened at this pivotal meeting that was a defining moment of the modern nuclear age?

Copenhagen premiered in May, 1998 at the Royal National Theatre, London, and in April, 2000 at the Royal Theater in New York. The best-reviewed play of the 2000 season, Copenhagen also has the distinction of winning all of the Tonys for which it was nominated, including Best Play and Best Director.

Renowned European director Tadeusz Bradecki (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) returns to Theatre Calgary to direct this electrifying Broadway phenomenon.
