EXCITING NEW EARLY BIRD RENEWAL DRAW - DEADLINE MAY 10

We have have unveiled our 2016-17 season of plays! Our new season sees a commitment to expanding the artistic programming we offer through partnerships with theatre companies on a provincial, national and international level, the introduction of a new initiative, TC UP CLOSE, and the continuation of our commitment to new play and artist development through FUSE and Shakespeare by the Bow.

"One of the things I’ve always loved about Calgarians is our true spirit of collaboration, and this new season reflects this generous spirit. Together we will share stories that are celebratory, heartbreaking and wondrous. Our new season is meant to remind us all that no matter what outside forces may press upon us, we are, in fact, all in this together." - Dennis Garnhum, Artistic Director

’da Kink is ’da Bomb!” – Toronto Sun

The smash hit play that inspired the television series now comes to Western Canada for the first time. Eight distinctive women in a Toronto hair salon share their unforgettable stories with surprising honesty and extraordinary joy. With these inspiring and uplifting characters, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll shout, “Amen!” A truly joyous celebration – the perfect way to kick off the season!

When this play launched fifteen years ago, it set the Canadian theatre scene on fire. We are so fortunate to have the author, Trey Anthony, reprising her role as Novelette, the clairvoyant owner of the salon. Following our run, this production travels to the National Arts Centre to share these gorgeous women with the nation’s capital. – Dennis

A can’t-miss theatrical experience.” – Calgary Sun

Critics have called it “spell-binding,” “dazzlingly original,” and “Miller’s best solo show to date.” Take an explosive journey through the music, culture and politics that defined the baby boom generation. Along with a stunning array of images and video, Rick Miller’s tour-de-force solo performance brings to life over a hundred iconic politicians, musicians and influential figures from 1945 to 1969.

BOOM had its first tryout run as part of our collaboration with the High Performance Rodeo two years ago. Since then, Rick has toured to every major centre in Canada and this has become one of the most popular new productions in the country. Join us for a victory lap, as Rick returns to show us his progress, and dazzle us with his unmistakable, unique talents. – Dennis

Wonderfully funny and genuinely moving.” – Daily Telegraph

For sixty years Queen Elizabeth II has held a private weekly meeting with each of her many Prime Ministers. Politicians have come and gone, but she has remained a constant. Through this riveting drama, we get a glimpse at the woman behind the crown and what it’s like to be one of the most famous, and yet most private people in the world. Expect visits from Churchill, Cameron, and Thatcher, among others. Elegant, majestic, and highly illuminating.

I am fascinated by two women on this project: the elusive Queen Elizabeth who has seen so much, and been such a curiosity for her entire interesting life, and the remarkable actor Seana McKenna, who will take on this role. Seana has all of the complexity and insight, pathos and humour befitting a queen. This is an actor and a role you’ll not soon forget. – Dennis

A story of hope and of life...inspirational, outstanding, every man and woman must read this tale.” – The Guardian

Based on the bestselling novel by the author of The Kite Runner, this hauntingly beautiful story reveals the strength of the human spirit. Set in war-torn Afghanistan, two women are brought together by fate, war and cruelty. Together they will forge an unlikely friendship that eventually leads to an act of unbreakable love.

A few seasons ago, our audiences showed tremendous curiosity and support for our production of The Kite Runner. Hearing about this, the Artistic Director of a.c.t., Carey Perloff, contacted Khaled Hosseini, and together we are happily launching this newest theatrical adaptation. What an honour it is for us to bring this novel to life. This is an inter-national collaboration of a truly international story. – Dennis

Everything that a musical comedy needs is there in spades.” – Toronto Star

When a young banker is sent to the sleepy town of Deadrock to foreclose a rundown theatre, his heart, and his life, are turned completely upside down. This hilarious song and dance extravaganza features classic Gershwin songs such as “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” It’s high-energy fun that The New York Times called “riotously entertaining.”

This is the ideal musical: old-fashioned familiar songs partnered with a hilarious script that celeb-rates the musical form. Expect cowboys, showgirls, tap dancing, frivolity and joy – a delightful finish to a truly thrilling and surprising season. Sit back, hum along, and be swept up by glorious songs by the incomparable Ira and George Gershwin. – Dennis

Celebrating 30 years of spirited tradition!

This season we celebrate a remarkable thirty years of bringing A Christmas Carol to Calgary. Stephen Hair returns as Ebenezer Scrooge in the annual production that the Calgary Sun called “the best of all possible versions of A Christmas Carol.” Filled with music and spectacle, there’s no better way to fill your heart with the spirit of Christmas.

Last season we recorded the highest attendance ever for our annual tradition. I can only attribute it to Calgarians’ magical connection to this story and to our desire to remember the true values of the holiday season – no matter what the economic climate brings us. Join us for a celebration of all that in good in humankind. Sing, laugh, and enjoy all that the season has to offer. – Dennis
